William Hodges was the artist aboard the Resolution, Capt. James Cook's ship on his Second Voyage (1772–1775). The picture shows a Maori male carrying a taiaha (spear) and with a club (mere) on a belt around his waist. He is accompanied by four Maori women. They are surrounded by dense vegetation. Many copies of Hodges' drawings were made and I have not been able to find the origin of this one.
