After James Cook's 1769 meticulous charting of New Zealand, the first detailed survey of the New Zealand coast was the work of Capt. John Lort Stokes in HMS Acheron and Capt. Byron Drury in HMS Pandora for the British Admiralty from 1848 to 1855. The inland detail is by W.J.W. Hamilton who was aboard the Acheron and was employed by the NZ Company to prospect for new settlement sites. There is an inset showing the numbers of more detailed charts for all the sections of the coastline.
