This is the third edition of James Wyld's chart first published in 1840 and based on James McDonnell's chart of 1839 first published in 1834. There are seven inserts of various regions of New Zealand. The South Island is "Middle Island" on this map and it is bare of inland detail except for Fiordland and the Nelson region. McDonnell's "Knowsley Bay" still appears North of Furveaux Strait. As the 19th century progressed, subsequent editions of this map gained more detail. The map has the magnificent title "To the Right Honourable Secretary of State for the Colonies, etc.,etc.,etc. This Chart of New Zealand from Original Surveys is respectfully dedicated by his very obedient servant James Wyld". This reproduction is of a folding emigration map published in Britain to encourage emigration to New Zealand.
