This pair of images has been assembled to illustrate the accuracy of James Cook's 1772 chart of New Zealand. Not only was his mapping of the coast extremely accurate but his placing of the whole of New Zealand with respect to longitude and latitude was also remarkable. His two errors – Banks Peninsula as an island and Stewart island as a possible peninsula – are excusable considering most of his plotting was conducted in these areas from the sea without coming ashore.
