Reproduction of a c1879 map of New Zealand by James WyldAntique Print Gallery
James Wyld was a major cartographer of the 19th Century. He died in 1887 and this could be the last of his many maps of New Zealand. It was published when the need for folded maps of New Zealand was greatly reduced. The copper plate from which this map was printed was probably an updated version of his 1843 map as the insets are the same. Railways, complete and under construction, are marked in red. The original map was hand-coloured and showed great detail including railways and major roads. The original map was folded and issued in a slipcase labelled "James Wyld, Geographer to Her Majesty" The original for this reproduction came from Dr. P.B. Maling's collection of folded emigration maps.
